Culturally, the region is one of the most diverse ones in Europe. It is an amalgamation of cultures and religions, Orthodox Christian, Muslim and Catholic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We have curated this one-week itinerary, revealing some of the best kept secrets of the inspiring cross-border area between Montenegro and Kosovo among amazingly simple, kind and generous people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><br \/>\nDAY 1<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Arrival to Plav in the afternoon<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Visit to Kula Redzepagica<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/etnomuzejkularedzepagica\/\">Kula Redzepagica<\/a>, a national cultural monument, is known to be one of the most photographed old buildings in Montenegro. It is a beautiful example of traditional local architecture and housing. With the inflows of nearby springs and rivers, its fresh waters are changing every four days. In summer, swimming and variety of other water sports (kayak, boats, pedal boats) are possible. Its beautiful scenery attracts in all seasons. The lake is also a great spot for birdwatchers. You can observe species specific for the region, such as: Mallard, Pochard, Coot, Moorhen, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Grey Heron, Cormorant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Traditional, home-made dinner<\/strong> at rural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruralholiday.me\/seoska-domacinstva\/plav-domacinstvo-savic\/\">household Savi\u0107<\/a> in the village Pepi\u0107e at the foot of Visitor mountain, 7 km from Plav lake. Photo credit: Tadeja Leskov\u0161ek<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>There are plenty of accommodation facilities available in Plav, such as: Timm Apartments, Ethno village Komnenovo, Lake Views Hotel and Camp, Canovic Appartments etc.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>DAY 2<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Visit to the Botanical Garden Velemun<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Botanicka-basta-Velemun-1705944856311096\/\">Velemun garden<\/a> was established in 1993 on the local waste disposal. It\u2019s a little oasis full of colourful native plants. Altogether, over 350 plants, 12% of total plant species in Montenegro, can be observed. Its passionate founder and owner has been collecting, preserving, displaying and labelling the plants with much love and care. Local inhabitants have long used this path to walk from Plav to Vradi\u0161te. After Vradi\u0161te, the trail returns via Zavr\u0161 to the \u0106uljuntra lookout, then descends to the centre of Plav, to Kula Redzepagica.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Somewhere in the middle of the trail, right after finishing the path of fungi and medicinal plants towards Budovice, rural household Feratovi\u0107 is a great stop for a hearty lunch.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Spending a night in katun<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em>To truly experience the Accursed Mountains, you need to spend a night under the stars in katun. Several legends speak of the beauty of Hrid lake. One of the most famous ones is that magical fairies bathe in it. The lake is mainly accessible between June and November. There, you can also learn how to make cheese, help with the preparation of authentic dishes or ride a horse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>After that, it\u2019s time to move towards Gusinje and Vusanje.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Visit to Ali Pasha Springs<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\n<em>The springs are named after a famous commander Ali Pasha of Gusinje.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u201cIn a beautiful, bucolic setting at the foothills of the Prokletije mountains, these karst springs are an ideal spot for a picnic. Locals extol the health benefits of drinking the springs&#8217; water, purportedly rich in therapeutic minerals. Its myriad shades of green are soothing to the eye. The valley is surrounded by rugged grey mountains rising to the sky high above.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There are several rural households in the surrounding villages where you can stop for a tasty lunch. Ancient history enthusiasts will enjoy searching for Magna Mater Stone Gravure near the abandoned Volu\u0161nica summer pasture. This ancient gravure is showing the combat of a man and a woman with a wolf, attacking their child. The monastery was founded in the first half of the 14th century by the king Stefan De\u010danski. For over 20 years, the passionate owner of this simple museum has been collecting precious historical pieces. Altogether, more than 1,000 objects are displayed, including a 5,000 years-old ancient stone artefact of special value.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Accommodation in De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>DAY 6<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Exploring Mountains around De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani Valley<br \/>\n<\/strong>After a hearty breakfast, it\u2019s time to explore mountains around De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani valley. The area is rich in biodiversity with a total of 750 plant species, of which 18 are endemic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>One of the best hiking trips starts <strong>from Zalli Rops to Qafa Bogiqe<\/strong> (2,090 m) which lies at the border line between Kosovo and Montenegro. From there, you can climb to the summit Maja Rops (2,501 m) and descend back. During this trip you will hike a segment of the renowned <a href=\"https:\/\/viadinarica.com\/en\/countries\/kosovo\">Via Dinarica mega trail<\/a>. This hike is 15 km long and it will take 6 hours. Another option is to cross the border and continue downhill to Katun Bogicevice in Montenegro.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For skilful mountaineers, hiking <strong>Maja e Gjeravic\u00ebs \/ Gjeravica<\/strong> is a must experience. With the elevation of 2,656 m, it is the highest mountain peak in the cross-border area between Kosovo and Montenegro and the second highest in the entire Dinarica mountain range. Several glacial lakes can be found near the summit, such as Gjeravica Lake \/ Liqeni i Gjeravic\u00ebs, the highest mountain lake in Kosovo located just under the summit of Gjeravica peak. It is also known for salamanders which feast on flying insects. There are several options to access Maja e Gjeravic\u00ebs \/ Gjeravica, one is from De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani and the other is from Gropat e Erenikut. The route from Gropat e Erenikut takes about 4-5 hours, while the route from De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani, in a total distance of around 14 km, takes 8 hours. There\u2019s also an option of combining the two routes, by starting in De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani and finishing in Gropat e Erenikut or the other way around.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Gjeravica is accessible in all seasons. One has to be in good shape and needs the appropriate gear. If a challenge is what you\u2019re after, give Gjeravica mountain a try in winter.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Two other interesting hiking trips from De\u00e7ani \/ De\u010dani valley are:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>1. Bjeshka e Prilepit (2,150 m) \u2013 Marijash \u2013 Shkallet e hajnave \u2013 Roshkodol, 12 km, 7 hours;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>2. Bjeshka Beleg (2,365 m) \u2013 Krshi Blet\u00ebs \u2013 Maja Madhe \u2013 Bjeshka Beleg, 10 km, 6 hours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In summer, you can spend the night in a simple hut in the mountains. Kind and generous shepherd families will provide a delicious organic meal. It was the first mill in Kosovo and in the wider region which had the most advanced electrical technology brought in from Austria. Plis is a white woolen hat traditionally worn in Kosovo. Wearing this hat requires special care. It must be kept white at all times! The height of the hat varies region to region and is part of the traditional local costume. Its style is thought to originate from a similar one worn by the Illyrians.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Filigree masters &#8211; there\u2019s only a handful of artisans that keep a centuries-old tradition of handmade filigree jewelry alive in Peja\/Pe\u0107 in Kosovo. Artisans spend hours curling fine silver threads into sophisticated necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets. Kosovo is one of rare places in Europe where this delicate lace-like kind of jewellery making tradition still exists. In the past, the area had its own silver mines and artisans had plenty of raw material to work with. Now, it is mainly imported, but filigree still holds special place in traditional wedding ceremonies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>If you\u2019re more of a <strong>nature lover or adventurer<\/strong>, you might want to spend the morning in Rugova valley.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Rugova Canyon is a place of great natural beauty. It is considered to be one of Europe&#8217;s longest and deepest canyons, reaching a depth up to 1,000 meters. The canyon has been declared a protected monument of natural heritage due to its geological, speleological and botanical values. With numerous hiking possibilities, with <strong>amazing \u201cTibetan Bridge\u201d<\/strong> (41 m of length and 60 m of height), a <strong>spectacular zip line and via ferrata<\/strong>, it is also one of the best destinations in Kosovo for nature lovers and adventurers. It belongs to the Khalwati order (also known as Khalwatiya or Halveti). Sufis are recognised for inspiring whirling ceremonies, aiming to reach the source of all perfection through listening to the music, praying and spinning in repetitive circles. The whirling has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar system orbiting the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The main public whirling ceremonies take place in January, March and August. Gre za najve\u010dje \u010drnogorsko ledeni\u0161ko jezero, ki je obenem tudi preto\u010dno, saj se v njem voda v celoti zamenja v \u0161tirih dneh. Priljubljeno je tudi za ribolov &#8211; \u017ee ve\u010d let zapored v za\u010detku julija tu poteka evropsko prvenstvo v muharjenju. Okopati se je tu mogo\u010de zlasti v poletnih mesecih. V Juniku na Kosovu nas tako prijazni skrbniki popeljejo po prelepi Sufijski mo\u0161eji Alijjei &#8211; Halvetije Xhaferije, kjer je mogo\u010de tudi preno\u010diti. Nedale\u010d stran pa lahko ob\u010dudujemo veli\u010dasten samostan Visoki De\u010dani, najve\u010djo UNESCO-vo kulturno dedi\u0161\u010dino \u010dlove\u0161tva na tem koncu sveta. Ve\u010d lepo prenovljenih kul pripoveduje zgodbo o tem, kako so po tradiciji v pritli\u010dju bivale \u017eivali, v prvem nadstropju \u017eenske z otroki, v gornjem nadstropju pa so modrovali mo\u0161ki \u010dlani skupnosti. Oba kraja sta izto\u010dnica za kulinari\u010dno razvajanje in pohodni\u0161ke podvige. Zlasti planina Hajla slovi po cveto\u010dih livadah.<\/p>\n<p>Spet na drugi strani meje nas Gjakova \/ Gjakov\u00eb preseneti s svojim \u017eivahnim, ustvarjalnim vzdu\u0161jem. Staro mestno jedro je posejano s privla\u010dnimi kavarnami, vinskimi kletmi in restavracijami. Poletne ve\u010dere \u017ee nekaj let bogati festival stand-up komedije. Tudi sicer so doma\u010dini poznani kot najve\u010dji duhovite\u017ei na Kosovu. Vzdu\u0161je v Prizrenu prav tako ne razo\u010dara.
